Located off I-20 inside the Perimeter, East Atlanta is enjoying a very hip resurgence thanks to its close proximity to downtown and an influx of new residents in the past 20 years. Once the site of fighting between Union and Confederate forces in the Battle of Atlanta, East Atlanta thrived as an urban trading crossroads following the Civil War. However, the residential homes that took root over the next 100 years fell into disrepair, as the population began to shift away in the 1960s. Today, the neighborhood is on the rise, drawing young residents who enjoy its cool atmosphere and the ability to walk down the street to see the next up-and-coming band or just grab a drink with friends. Most of the homes in East Atlanta are either originals that are being refurbished or are new construction two-story homes in place of torn-down houses. The result is an affordable, gentrified – but not too polished – neighborhood with an energetic feel.
